Reflection: Why You Feel Guilty When You Put Yourself First

Reflection: Why You Feel Guilty When You Put Yourself First
Have you ever taken an hour for yourself, only to spend the whole time thinking about everything you should be doing instead?
If so, you’re not alone.
For many of us, guilt doesn’t appear because we’ve done something wrong. It appears because we’ve done something different.
Somewhere along the way, we absorbed the message that being a “good” mum meant always being available. Always putting everyone else first. Always saying yes. We learned that our worth was measured by how much we gave, not by how well we looked after ourselves.
Those beliefs can run deep.
The problem is, no one hands out medals for running on empty.
Your family doesn’t benefit from you being exhausted. Your colleagues don’t need you to burn yourself out to prove your commitment. And your children don’t need a version of you that’s constantly overwhelmed and running on fumes.
What they need is you.
Healthy.
Present.
Able to laugh, listen and enjoy the moments that matter.
I’ve learned that putting yourself first doesn’t mean putting everyone else last. It simply means recognising that your needs belong on the list too.
That might be asking for help.
Going for a walk on your own.
Saying no without explaining yourself.
Reading a book instead of folding the washing immediately.
Or simply sitting down with a hot cup of tea before you start solving everyone else’s problems.
None of those things make you selfish.
They make you human.
The truth is, we can’t keep pouring from an empty cup forever. Eventually, something has to give. The choice isn’t between looking after yourself or looking after the people you love. Looking after yourself is how you continue showing up for the people you love.
So the next time guilt whispers that you’ve done something wrong by choosing yourself, ask a different question.
Would I want my daughter to believe she had to earn the right to rest?
If the answer is no, perhaps it’s time to stop teaching yourself that lesson too.
Because you matter.
Not after everyone else is okay.
Not when everything on the to-do list is finished.
Not when you’ve finally “earned” a break.
You matter today.
Always. ❤️
