Reflection: The Mental Load Nobody Sees

Reflection: The Mental Load Nobody Sees
From the outside, it can look like we’ve got it all together.
We’re at work. The children are where they need to be. Dinner somehow appears on the table. Birthdays aren’t forgotten. The school forms get signed. Life keeps moving.
People often say, “I don’t know how you do it.”
The truth?
Neither do we.
Because what they don’t see is the constant mental checklist running in the background.
Have I replied to that email?
Do I need to buy a birthday present?
Have I booked the dentist?
Did I feed the cat?
What’s for dinner?
Does that school trip need paying?
Is everyone okay?
It’s like having fifty browser tabs open in your mind all day, every day. Even when you’re sitting still, your brain isn’t.
That’s why the exhaustion runs so deep.
It’s not always physical.
It’s cognitive.
It’s emotional.
It’s the relentless responsibility of remembering, anticipating and carrying the invisible work that keeps family life running.
For a long time, I thought I just needed to become more organised, more efficient or better at managing my time.
Now I know that wasn’t the problem.
The problem was believing I had to carry it all myself.
The mental load isn’t a personal failure. It’s a shared responsibility that too often becomes invisible because we’re so good at quietly getting on with it.
And here’s something I’ve been learning: asking for help isn’t admitting defeat. Sharing the load doesn’t mean you’re less capable. It means you’re recognising that no one is designed to carry the weight of an entire household, career and family in their head alone.
If you’ve been feeling exhausted lately, perhaps your body isn’t asking for another coffee or another productivity hack.
Perhaps it’s asking for less to carry.
So today, give yourself permission to stop trying to hold every thread together. Let someone else remember the shopping list. Let someone else organise the appointment. Let someone else help.
Because you don’t need to do it all to be enough.
Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is put one of those invisible tabs down. ❤️
